About the Document Editor

The Document Editor is a rich text editor designed for accessible content creation and editing. It supports markdown formatting, real-time text-to-speech integration, and speech-to-text dictation. The editor provides a comprehensive writing environment with cross-platform compatibility and aggressive accessibility features enabled by default.

Display Controls

Font Scaling and Zoom

The Document Editor supports dynamic font scaling for improved readability:

Keyboard Controls: - Ctrl + Plus: Increase font size (zoom in) - Ctrl + Minus: Decrease font size (zoom out) - Ctrl + Mouse Wheel Up: Make text larger - Ctrl + Mouse Wheel Down: Make text smaller

The zoom factor adjusts all text proportionally while maintaining document formatting and structure.

Settings

  • Ctrl + Alt + S: Open the main settings window

Speech and Dictation Integration

Text-to-Speech

Launch the integrated text-to-speech reader to have your document read aloud:

  • Alt + S: Launch Text-to-Speech Reader

When activated, text-to-speech opens a separate reader window that begins reading from the current cursor position in the Document Editor. This dual-window approach allows you to continue editing while listening to the content being read in the dedicated reader window.

Speech-to-Text Dictation

Convert spoken words directly into text within the editor:

  • Alt + D: Start dictation
  • Alt + D (again): Stop dictation

During dictation, spoken words appear as text at the cursor position. The dictation system supports continuous speech recognition with real-time transcription.

File Operations

Opening Documents

Access files through the integrated file explorer:

  • Ctrl + O: Open file explorer to load a document

The file explorer supports multiple formats including markdown, plain text, PDF documents, and ASVX (the native Assistivox AI format for logical document structure that enables optimized reading).

Saving Documents

Save your work using the file management system:

  • Ctrl + S: Open file explorer to save the current document

Assistivox saves documents in the native ASVX format, preserving formatting and document structure.

Export Options

Convert documents to different formats for sharing and distribution:

  • Alt + E: Open export format selection window

Export options allow you to convert your document into various formats while maintaining formatting and accessibility features.

PDF Integration

Linked PDF Viewing

When your document is associated with a source PDF file:

  • Alt + O: Open PDF viewer showing the original document

This feature enables reference viewing of source materials while editing derived content, maintaining the connection between the original PDF and your edited document.

Editing Features

The Document Editor provides rich text formatting capabilities with markdown support, allowing you to create structured documents with headings, lists, emphasis, and other formatting elements. The editor maintains accessibility throughout the editing process, ensuring that all features remain usable regardless of visual capabilities.

Workflow Integration

The Document Editor integrates seamlessly with other Assistivox AI components, providing a unified content creation workflow. Switch between editing and reviewing modes, dictate content while reviewing previous sections, and maintain access to source materials throughout the writing process.
